Hair loss is a concern that can affect anyone and like many conditions, there is no singular explanation.

A hair transplant moves hair to an area of the scalp that is thin or bald. It can be an effective procedure for those who have lost hair and have already tried other hair loss treatments.

The hair transplant technique available at the Marlborough Clinic Belfast is called Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). FUE is a minimally invasive treatment (no cutting of a strip) and is carried out under local anaesthetic by Dr Andrew McCleery.

The FUE technique uses a microscopic biopsy punch to remove individual hair grafts from the area of the scalp where hairs are genetically programmed to continue growth (known as the donor area, typically located at the back of the head) to the area affected by hair loss. The advantage of this is that it provides a natural look and leaves no linear scars, making for a shorter healing time for the donor area.

Who is a FUE hair transplant suitable for?

  • People with thinning or balding at the top of their head
  • People who cut their hair short, such as shaved to a number 1 or 2, as there is minimal scarring left as a result

Benefits of a FUE hair transplant:

  • Natural process: the hairs implanted grow naturally and does not involve chemicals
  • Time efficient: procedure takes less than one day to complete
  • Fast recovery time
  • Low maintenance
  • Less invasive than FUT method as linear incisions are not used

Hair transplants can have life changing effects for those who are suitable candidates. Before you decide to have hair transplant surgery, you need to think carefully about your expectations and discuss such expectations with your hair transplant surgeon. It is important to be aware that most people start seeing their desired results after around 12 months of growth but the entire growth process can take up to 18 months for the full outcome.

At your informative consultation, our hair transplant surgeon will listen to your concerns about hair loss. He will complete a medical and hair loss history, together with examining your scalp and taking photographs. Following completion of a comprehensive assessment he will establish your suitability for a FUE hair transplant procedure. We encourage you to ask questions and have these answered to your full satisfaction as part of this informative consultation. You will be provided with a bespoke written treatment plan and estimate for you to take time to consider.

We have a dedicated hair transplant suite, together with a recovery room in our RQIA-approved facility. Our team will ensure that you are care is predictable, safe and comfortable.

Our FUE prices vary depending on a number of factors including extent of hair loss, the number of grafts and complexity.

As an indication our prices range from £3,000-£10,000. Due to the price being dependant on multiple individual factors, it is naturally different for every person. In order to accurately determine the number of grafts a clinical consultation will be required. A bespoke written treatment plan and estimate is prepared following your clinical consultation with our hair transplant surgeon which costs £150.

Tabeo may also act as a credit broker and servicer, meaning that your loan will be written and managed entirely through Tabeo.

To be eligible for financing, you’ll need to have a suitable term and credit profile. The finance decision will ultimately be made by the finance company. Tabeo will only introduce you to one suitable lender.

How long does it take to apply for finance with Tabeo?

It only takes 2 minutes to apply, and you’ll get an answer straight away. Applying for a loan has never been easier, and it will not affect your credit score. If you’re interested in getting a hair transplant on finance, you can discuss this with one of our Welcome Team.

Finance allows patients to spread the cost of the procedure, but it is important to check that you can afford the repayments. For further information, please Click Here.

How much will my Hair Transplant Surgery cost on finance?

Our hair transplant prices start from £3,000 for FUE, but the actual cost of your hair transplant will depend on your specific needs. To determine the cost of your treatment you will require a clinical consultation with our Hair Transplant Surgeon which costs £150. At this informative clinical consultation Dr McCleery will assess your suitability for FUE Hair Transplant Surgery and a written estimate is provided as part of this consultation.

Is a hair transplant painful?

Hair transplants are not painful for most people as local anaesthetic is applied to the head beforehand. Local anaesthesia is given via injection, and this may cause a slight sting and some discomfort. Mild irritation and tightness/swelling of the head can occur after the surgery, alongside both scabbing and itching in the donor and recipient site, but this is usually only temporary and pain relief medication can be taken.

Will I need to book time off work?

You are advised to book several days off work immediately after the procedure to recover smoothly and avoid complications, this also allows for swelling to minimise. This is particularly important for those in intense manual labouring jobs, as heavy lifting causes blood to flow to the scalp and this can affect the hair grafts.

What are the potential side effects of a hair transplant?

Although rare, there are numerous potential side effects of a hair transplant, including:

  • Pain and discomfort
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Itchiness
  • Visible scars
  • Limited growth

How long will it take to see results?

It is important to note that a shedding phase occurs whereby newly transplanted hairs fall out of the head anywhere from 3-6 weeks. Hairs will first start appearing around 2-4 months after the procedure although they may be of a thin appearance. Most people start seeing their desired results after around 12 months of growth, but the entire growth process can take up to 18 months for the full outcome.

What should I avoid right after my transplant?

It is crucial to follow the post operative advice and take all medication provided after the procedure to maximise the likelihood of a successful transplant.

Once I decided to proceed with the treatment it was straightforward and fast. My recovery has been smooth, and I am delighted with my results so far. “I had spent a considerable amount of time researching various clinics to have a hair transplant carried out. I decided to book a consultation with Dr McCleery at the clinic. The appointment was everything I had hoped it would be, Dr McCleery was extremely helpful, advising me on what he thought would give me the best end result, I decided there and then I would get the procedure done at Marlborough clinic. The staff in the clinic were amazing right from that first telephone call, throughout the consultation, the procedure itself and the aftercare was second to none. I had a slight accident a few days following the procedure and contacted Dr McCleery for advice, within one hour he met me at the clinic, checked everything over and provided reassurance that all was ok. Dr McCleery went over and above. If you are looking for excellent care, provided in a clean and safe environment with professional, knowledgeable staff I cannot recommend the clinic enough.”

Whilst researching options for having the treatment completed in Northern Ireland I found Marlborough Clinic Belfast. I could have my consultation and hair transplant procedure completed at this clinic in Belfast. No travel outside of Northern Ireland required. When I contacted the practice I understood it is an RQIA approved clinic for hair transplant treatment and they only carry out one hair transplant per day. Procedure Overview:

Firstly, the patient is usually positioned lying face down on the couch and local anaesthetic and tumescent solutions are injected subcutaneously by Dr McCleery meaning there should be no pain felt during the surgery.

Extraction starts and grafts are transferred to trays, and classified as a single hair, two hairs and three or more hair grafts and recorded. The FUE technique uses a microscopic biopsy punch to remove individual hair grafts, in a similar way as an apple corer removes the core of an apple. Once the extraction is over, the patient has a light lunch and a drink.

The next phase of the procedure gets underway and the patient sits in the normal position on the couch. Dr McCleery then injects local anaesthetic into the recipient area and makes slits for the grafts to be inserted. After the procedure is finished the patient is provided with their post-operative care package. They can return home, but should be driven by another person.

6. Post-Operative Care

Recovery Guidelines:

After the procedure, it is usually recommended that patients book the next few days off work to recover. We provide detailed post-operative care instructions to facilitate a smooth and speedy recovery. This includes information on managing discomfort, washing hair, caring for the transplanted area and follow-up appointments.
