Dr Maria Tumelty is an Oral Medicine Specialist with extensive experience and passion for advancing dental care. She earned her BDS with distinction from Queen’s University Belfast and completed her Dental Foundation Training in Scotland. During this time, she earned her MFDS from RCPS Glasgow. She worked in community dental and Maxillofacial SHO posts which served to spark an interest into medicine as it applied to dental conditions and pursued this interest further by undertaking a Medical Degree earning her MB BCh BAO with distinction from Queen’s University Belfast.

Maria commenced her oral medicine training as a clinical lecturer in Glasgow University where she was heavily involved in the mentoring and teaching of undergraduate dental students allowing her to share her knowledge and passion for this complex field. She also undertook an additional Research Degree examining the oral microbiome associated with orofacial granulomatosis.

Maria completed her oral medicine training in Belfast and was successful in obtaining the prestigious Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Oral Medicine to grant her the title of a Specialist in the field of Oral Medicine. She is the first person to complete oral medicine training in Northern Ireland.

Maria has published in numerous scientific papers in the field of dental research and oral medicine. She is an active member of the British and Irish Society for Oral medicine.

Maria specialises in the diagnosis and management of patients with complex oral health conditions including red/white lesions, oral ulceration, pigmented lesions, oral potentially malignant disorders, salivary gland disorders, orofacial pain and oral manifestations of systemic disease. She is dedicated in providing high-quality, patient centred care. There are a relative handful of Oral Medicine Specialists across the UK so we are very honoured to have her as part of our team and to be able to offer her highly skilled services.
