Aims:

  • Stage IV periodontitis with projected loss of dentition and planning transition to dentures
  • Making a good immediate denture/retaining and stabilising key abutment teeth
  • Using periodontally involved teeth to support dentures – planning for possible additions
  • Occlusion and splinting of periodontally involved teeth
  • Periodontally involved teeth as abutments for fixed restorations
  • Hemisections and root amputation to retain teeth

Objectives:

  • Understand the challenges of tooth replacement in periodontally compromised dentitions
  • Consider steps to achieve the best possible immediate denture and planning for future loss
  • Consider options to retain very compromised teeth and their feasibility
  • Consider the need for occlusal management in periodontally compromised dentition

Speaker – James Nelson

James qualified from Queen’s University Belfast in 2014, and completed his Dental Foundation Training in Devon. He then completed Dental Core Training years in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Paediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, and Restorative Dentistry in Northern Ireland and Scotland. He became a Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2016. James then undertook a 5-year programme of Specialty Training in Restorative Dentistry in the School of Dentistry, Belfast, and completed the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (ISFE) in Restorative Dentistry. Following completion of this training, he was appointed as Fellow of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and is registered on the Specialist List for Restorative Dentistry with the General Dental Council.

James has extensive experience of delivering restorative dentistry treatment as part of holistic and multidisciplinary care. He welcomes referrals for fixed and removable prosthodontics and periodontology. James also has a particular interest in the stabilisation and rehabilitation of patients with periodontitis with both non-surgical and surgical treatments.

Speaker – Marie Sharkey

Marie qualified in 2011 with Merit in Clinical Dentistry from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Following qualification she worked in general dental practice in the North East of England for a few years before returning to Northern Ireland. In 2017 Marie was awarded Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow.

Marie’s postgraduate area of interest is periodontology; this field has grown to encompass the treatment of disease in the supporting tissues surrounding dental implants, in addition to the treatment of gum disease associated with teeth. She completed a Masters with Distinction in Clinical Periodontology in 2022 at the University of Central Lancashire.

Marie is committed to developing patient focused treatment plans. She prides herself on her evidence-based approach to treatment planning and frequently attends courses focusing on the field of periodontology, including a recent visit to Italy to study at the Zucchelli Institute. She offers a wide range of treatments including surgical and non-surgical periodontal therapies. Marie is a member of the British Society of Periodontology.
