Aims:

  • Management of periodontitis prior to implants
  • Steps to reduce risk of peri-implantitis (implant placement, restoration design, fixed vs removable, removal of fixed restorations for PMPR, regular PMPR, home care)
  • Management of peri-implantitis

Objectives:

  • Understand peri-implantitis, and its similarities and differences to periodontitis
  • Understand risk factors for peri-implantitis, and how these can be controlled
  • Be aware of the management of peri-implantitis and consider the prognosis of affected implants

Speaker – James Nelson

James qualified from Queen’s University Belfast in 2014, and completed his Dental Foundation Training in Devon. He then completed Dental Core Training years in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Paediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, and Restorative Dentistry in Northern Ireland and Scotland. He became a Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2016. James then undertook a 5-year programme of Specialty Training in Restorative Dentistry in the School of Dentistry, Belfast, and completed the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (ISFE) in Restorative Dentistry. Following completion of this training, he was appointed as Fellow of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and is registered on the Specialist List for Restorative Dentistry with the General Dental Council.

James has extensive experience of delivering restorative dentistry treatment as part of holistic and multidisciplinary care. He welcomes referrals for fixed and removable prosthodontics and periodontology. James also has a particular interest in the stabilisation and rehabilitation of patients with periodontitis with both non-surgical and surgical treatments.

Speaker – Rachael Lilley

Rachael has been working as a Dental Hygiene Therapist for 10 years after graduating with distinction and finishing top of her class at Newcastle University in 2013.

She has a special interest in implant maintenance and gum treatments to help improve oral health and increase the longevity of your dental implants, together with helping you keep your natural teeth for as long as possible.  She is skilled at providing easy tips and techniques that can be applied at home to help protect your dental implants and gums. Rachael is on the committee for the BSDHT and together with the rest of the team, helps provide a strong educational and social community for other hygienists and therapists in Northern Ireland. She has also delivered engaging educational presentations to the wider dental community.

Rachael has previously been nominated for NI Dental Hygienist of the Year and is committed to continuing her professional education.
