By the end of the course delegates will be more experienced and comfortable in providing oral surgery treatments for their patients.

The course is interactive to address and support the individual needs for each delegate.

Day 1 Aims:

  • Examine oral anatomy and its relevance to surgical planning and local anaesthetic techniques.
  • Understand the variety of instruments and materials available to surgeons, including types of sutures and haemostats, and their usage techniques.
  • Review basic tooth extraction techniques and advance to simple surgical procedures, focusing on flap design, removal of obstructions, and bone removal.
  • Use antimicrobials and analgesics in a rational and evidence-based manner.

Objectives:

  • Expand medical knowledge and apply it to patient assessments.
  • Understand the relationship between oral anatomy and surgical procedures.
  • Identify and effectively use appropriate surgical instruments and techniques for dental extractions.
  • Develop a systematic approach to progress from simple to more difficult surgical extractions.
  • Identify risk factors in oral surgery, help avoid complications, and manage them if they occur.
  • Discuss the challenges encountered with dental extractions in practice.
  • Describe methods for extracting roots.
  • Review current guidance for medical issues in oral surgery.

Day 2 Aims:

  • Learn the correct terminology and nomenclature for different types of impactions.
  • Focus on wisdom tooth removal and the appropriate approaches for various types of impactions.
  • Examine the consequences of treatment and non-treatment.

Objectives:

  • Identify common types of impactions.
  • Choose appropriate treatment approaches for individual patients.
  • Management guidance to the surgical removal of wisdom teeth.
  • Provide patients with appropriate advice on behavioural management and medical issues related to these treatments.
  • Review principles for the surgical extraction of teeth, including flap design, sectioning teeth, and suturing.
  • Participate in hands-on surgery with pig heads.
  • Learn how to deal with complications.

Speaker – Callum McCandless

A graduate of Queen’s University Belfast, Callum has a special interest in Oral Surgery.

Over the years he has developed his skillset acquiring invaluable experience in a number of hospitals including Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery speciality in Belfast, Cheltenham and Bristol.

He is committed to providing high-quality surgical treatments to his patients and has continued his postgraduate education, gaining his MFDS from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in 2020.

Callum’s passion for oral surgery extends beyond the clinic, as he continually seeks opportunities for growth and learning within his field. His understanding of oral surgery techniques and commitment to making sure his patients feel understood and comfortable before any treatment is carried out is what he believes makes for great outcomes to any appointment.
